What is Diminished Value?
Diminished value is the contrast between a vehicle’s market worth before damage and its reduced value following repairs. Diminished value represents an accelerated depreciation stemming from a vehicle’s damage history. Even after undergoing flawless repairs, the vehicle’s value will still decrease. Because accident damage significantly diminishes the demand for your vehicle.
Types of Diminished Value Estimates
There are several types of Diminished Value Estimates:
The inherent loss in value since the vehicle has a history of being in an accident, regardless of how well it has been repaired.
This estimate focuses on the decrease in value immediately after the accident and repairs have been completed.
An estimate provided by insurance companies to compensate policyholders for the diminished value of their vehicle.
An estimate based on market research and analysis of comparable vehicles with accident histories. Vehicle’s make, model, age, mileage, and the extent of the accident damage considered.
This estimate is conducted by professional appraisers who assess the diminished value of a vehicle based on various factors, including the vehicle’s condition, repair history, and market trends.
Vehicle owners may attempt to estimate the diminished value themselves based on their knowledge of the vehicle, the extent of the damage, and market conditions.
- Determine Your Vehicle’s value using the online calculator.
- Multiply the value of the car by .10 (10%) to determine the base loss of value.
- Multipliers range on the severity of the damage. (See Table Below.)
- Multiply the vehicle’s value calculated (prior) with the mileage multiplier (See Table Below.)
Damage Level | Damage Multiplier |
Severe structural damage | 1.00 |
Major damage to the structure and panels (vehicle) | 0.75 |
Moderate damage to the structure and panels (vehicle) | 0.50 |
Minor damage to the structure and panels (vehicle) | 0.25 |
No damage to the structure and panels (vehicle) | 0.00 |

Current mileage | Mileage multiplier |
0 to 19,999 miles | 1.00 |
20,000 to 39,999 miles | 0.80 |
40,000 to 59,999 miles | 0.60 |
60,000 to 79,999 miles | 0.40 |
80,000 to 99,999 miles | 0.20 |
Over 100,000 miles | 0.00 |
Calculation
- If Vehicle value: $10,000
- Base loss of value: $10,000 x 10% = $1,000
- Damage multiplier: $1,000 x 0.75 = $750
- Mileage multiplier: $750 x 0.40 = $300
- Diminished value: $300

What We Do
Using a formula (17c) to figure out diminished value is easy, but it’s not the best way to prove your claim for diminished value. It fails to address Vehicle class and Carfax notations. We do not inflate or deflate the amount.
